The State of the Service Catalog-What is a Service anyway? (Post 1 of 5)

Miami University

A 5 post series about the Service Catalog presented to you by Dana P. Miller, Service Catalog Process Owner

The word “service” is used quite often and in many different ways in the workplace.

The services in the Service Catalog have been created with this definition of a service in mind:

A Service is a means of delivering value to customers by facilitating outcomes customers want to achieve without the ownership of specific costs and risks.

Another way of looking at this definition of service is to think about how we get electricity into our homes.  We want electricity in our homes for lighting, heating and other uses but we don’t want to invest in a coal burning power plant in the back yard to generate our electricity.  We rely on the power utility to provide the electric service and we are willing to pay them for the service.

Instead of electricity, we provide the IT services as defined in the Service Catalog.  By definition, those services deliver value and facilitate faculty, staff, and students achieving their desired outcomes.

This series about the Service Catalog is designed to help you understand how your daily work contributes to the success of IT Services and Miami University.

If you have any questions or ideas for improving the Service Catalog contact me ([email protected]) or enter a Continual Improvement Committee for IT Services (CIRCUIT) suggestion.

Thanks.
