Yesterday’s Accessibility Symposium was another success for the AccessMU team. It was the fourth annual symposium, and it represented weeks of work culminating in one awesome event.
The day began with a keynote speech from Janet Peters, Project Coordinator at the Great Lakes ADA Center, about how inclusion drives
innovation. The necessity of new, inclusive technologies, Janet explained, has led to some of the most important advances in the things we take for granted today. The iPhone, for instance, is a very accessible device, thanks to the two blind engineers that played an instrumental part in its design.
The rest of the day was broken up into concurrent sessions so that symposium attendees could choose what they wanted to learn about. Some of the panels included:
- Collaboration-Driven Accessibility: A Publisher’s View
- Digital Accessibility and Higher Education: What You Need to Know
- MU Center for Assistive Technology: Engineering Improved Quality of Life
- Creating Disability Pride on Campus: Students with Disabilities Advisory Council Promoting Disability Studies 101

All in all, it was a well organized symposium, thanks to Lisa Raatz and the AccessMU team. Thanks for a great event, folks! Excited to attend next year.
