This image is a print based on a painting done by the artist earlier with model Kathleen Newton. It has stylistic references to Japanese prints in the position of the model and in the manner in which she holds an umbrella. The flattened picture plane is also an allusion to Japanese printmaking which greatly influenced Europe in the late 19th century. The print version is a cropped image of the original painting leaving room for Tissot’s signature in the corner while removing a stool and narrowing the picture on the sides. Tissot worked both in England and France.
