The Department of Accountancy faculty and staff gathered at Hueston Woods on September 26 for a department retreat, a morning of reflection and focused conversations on how to strengthen the program, sharpen its curriculum, and chart out new opportunities for students and colleagues.
Curriculum Innovation was a central theme. First, Michele Frank guided a discussion about the MAcc program, with faculty weighing in on CPA exam changes, student skill gaps, and strategies for course redesign. Next, she was joined by Ted Polat and Yibo (James) Zhang to facilitate dialogue on enhancing the student experience—particularly, the infusion of AI into coursework, creative capstone projects, and unique learning opportunities like etiquette dinners and plant visits.
The retreat also delved into teaching and classroom culture, with Dan Heitger leading a thoughtful exchange on assessment practices, group work, integrity, and cultivating classrooms that foster critical thinking and clear communication.
After lunch, attention shifted to faculty and scholarship development. Matt Wieland and Jon Grenier facilitated a discussion on externships, research forums, mentoring, and grant development—all with the goal of enriching both faculty expertise and student outcomes.
The day concluded with committee planning, as four groups—Educational Experience, External Engagement, Faculty Excellence, and Student Recruitment—mapped out action plans to meet their goals. The retreat wrapped up with a focused conversation on new tenure-track hiring needs, led by Qing Burke and Po-Chang Chen.
From curriculum redesign to faculty growth, the retreat underscores the department’s shared commitment to continuous innovation and excellence. We all look forward to a strong year ahead, and beyond!
