Self in the Digital Age: A Student Response Exhibition

By Katherine Stefaniuk

From social media and AI, to memories and personal connections; Miami students are exploring what it means to be themselves in a rapidly changing, constantly digitalizing world.

Self in the Digital Age: A Student Response Exhibition opened October 16th at Hiestand Galleries, bringing together student artwork that examines how technology shapes individual identity and relationships with family, friends, and the broader world around them. Visitors can view the exhibition and vote for their favorite artwork now through November 15.

Organized by the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum and the Department of Art, this is the 11th Student Response Exhibition at Miami University. This juried exhibition invites Miami students from any campus, major, or year to explore self-expression and how it relates to others through their work.

The exhibition features a vast range of artistic approaches to the theme.

Congratulations to the following students whose works were accepted into the exhibition: Annelise Bieniecki, Lucy Blystone, Mouhamadou Dieng, Eleanor Flinders, Owen Gillespie, Emily Harless, Jordyn Isaacks, Abdurahman Ismail, Kenna Klaber, Rilyn Manne, William Puchot, Lila Tangorre, Sammy Villalva, Lia Watt, Hayley Willen, Maiyah Williams, Maureen Wilson, Jayna Wise, and Natassia York.

All these works, and many more, offer different perspectives on the exhibition’s central question: How does living in a digital age shape the way people understand themselves and connect with others?

Visitors can help determine the exhibition’s award winners by voting for their favorite works. The three works selected by visitors will receive cash prizes of $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place.

A reception and awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, at 4:30pm at Hiestand Galleries. The exhibition will be open for viewing through November 19th. Hiestand Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 AM-4:30 PM.
