New MUAM Exhibitions

By Abigail Solon

Welcome back everyone!

Whether you are a brand new freshman taking your first steps on campus or a senior just trying to graduate on time, a new semester can be rough. However, students are not the only ones who are back in business, the Miami University Art Museum (MUAM) reopened after a summer filled with installations. We are excited to introduce three new exhibitions. Open now through December 14, come see a variety of works covering death traditions, ancient ceramics, and the history of wood relief prints!

Walking into MUAM, Cutting the Grain: Nuances of Wood Relief Prints will beckon you in. As an introduction to the world of wood relief printmaking, this exhibition focuses on how the medium has evolved in the past 1,400 years. Using reverse image print processes, artists throughout time have mastered the technique of bringing a subject to life simply by using wood blocks and ink. And when you go home, maybe you will decide to create your own prints!

Let Illuminating the Past: Utilitarian Ceramics of the Ancient World light your way through the gallery as you look around to see these often overlooked forms of ancient pottery. Before there were flashlights and electricity nearly everywhere, people had to use oil lamps as a source of light, and it is truly fascinating to see these thousands of years old household items withstand time. Put together by some of your fellow students and faculty, this installation manages to show how even the simplest works can be considered art.

Visit and learn about death and burial traditions from over 20 countries in the Life Cycles: Death exhibition. From Day of the Dead figurines to memory pieces created from a loved one’s hair, you will no doubt learn something new as you discover death and burial practices from across the globe. A few favorites of the exhibition are the ancient sarcophagus and the mourning gown!

As always, do not forget to check out our ongoing exhibitions, Art History at a Glance, Global Perspectives and The Charles M. Messer Leica Camera Collection. Featuring works from the museum’s permanent collection, learn about the history of art from all over the world. There is something for everyone, so even if you do not know much about art, that’s what we’re here for! Ask questions, explore, and be sure to check our list of special events. Have a great semester!

The galleries are FREE & OPEN to ALL every Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturdays from Noon-5 PM.
