Bruccoli Great War Collection, Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, University of South Carolina<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Following America\u2019s entrance in the Great War, the tune <span class=\"s1\">of the nation shifted from the likes of <i>I Didn\u2019t Raise<\/i><\/span><i> My Boy to be a Soldier<\/i> to this wildly popular hit featured in the 1917 musical revue <i>The Passing Show<\/i>. The song refers to America\u2019s indebtedness to France for the help of Gilbert du <span class=\"s1\">Motier, Marquis de La Fayette during the American<\/span> Revolutionary War.
