Llinares et al. states that podcasting possesses “the advantages of the internet while expelling some of the pitfalls.” (2018) To analyze this idea further, it’s necessary to examine the opportunities and constraints of both social media and podcasts as communicative mediums. Podcasting discourse differs from the dominant mode of social media discourse, as technological affordances rearrange the landscape for communication. Podcast discourse is not “defined by the culture of instantaneous reaction, soundbite reductionism and anonymous mudslinging,” but rather the medium cultivates an approach that results in conversational, informal, personal, even supportive, atmospheres.” (2018) These questions bear relevance in the realm of contemporary media communications and fan studies as the growing popularity of podcasting has taken the media world by storm. To compare these mediums of podcasting and social media, we can better comprehend what sets them apart socially and technologically. The focus of this research spans across communication studies, media studies, and fan/fandom studies. To uncover answers, I analyzed several text transcripts from The Real Housewives fan-recap podcast, Andy’s Girls. It was pertinent to utilize both a qualitative research approach in addition to thematic analyses to compound the data and discover more on the subject. To engage with audiences and supply meaningful messages is becoming increasingly difficult as the evolution of technology continues to fracture audiences across mediums. In The Real Housewives fandom, performing authenticity is essential to making a meaningful and lasting connection online. Podcasting allows for the performance of authenticity to flow more freely, and the performance is not held back by the technological constraints of social media. This study has been influential in developing a greater understanding of how to communicate messages to audiences and utilize technologies based on their particular communicative affordances in addition to strengthening my ability to think critically about technology, media, fandom, and communication.

Author(s): Mason Weber, Media and Culture and Film Studies Major

Advisor(s): Carolyn Hardin, Department of Media Journalism and Film

Podcasts have become a popular medium where celebrities and media creators are able to engage in free-flowing conversations and express themselves authentically.
