This poster describes attempts to determine how well universities are matching the recommendations made by the Obama Administration in 2014 for comprehensive sexual misconduct policies. Policies from ten universities in the state of Ohio were qualitatively analyzed to determine the extent to which each policy adhered to the ten recommended sections of a comprehensive policy. Universities were assigned a score based upon the amount of recommended information in each of the ten sections. Scores were given on a scale of 0-4, with a total score of 40 points possible (10 policy sections, each with a possible high score of 4). Policies were also assigned a usability score to reflect how easy it may be for a student to navigate large amounts of information. Findings revealed that the content of universities’ misconduct policies vary widely, and that the usability of policies may not be conducive to helping student survivors get the resources and information they need after an assault. Recommendations for universities include providing more thorough information regarding prevention and response protocols for sexual violence, as well as improving the ease of access and the navigation of online misconduct policy information.

Authors: Mayah Haidar, Kali Sarver, & Ali Derick

Faculty Advisor: Paul Flaspohler, PhD, Department of Psychology

Graduate Student Advisor: Jack Baker, MA, Department of Psychology

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Prevalence rates of sexual assault on college campuses vary from 1% to 25% of college students, making it imperative that universities have extensive, yet easily accessible student misconduct policies to help prevent violence and provide resources to survivors.
