The ability to establish and track eye gaze with a caregiver (joint attention) is essential for language acquisition, as disruptions to these foundational interactions can impact the child across their lifespan. Knowing visual attention can present challenges for autistic children, it is important to understand how parents navigate interactions with their children. This exploratory study between hearing parents and their autistic children seeks to address the following question: what attention-getting and attention-maintenance strategies are used by hearing parents of autistic children ages 3-5 during play?

We analyzed videos of three hearing dyads interacting during a semi-structured play protocol of three activities. A coding scheme was then developed through qualitative exploration of the data. Data were coded for attention-getting and maintenance strategies using four criteria: strategy goal, strategy modality, strategy subtype, and language type.

Results show that hearing parents are primarily utilizing the auditory modality when it comes to facilitating attention. Additionally, speech was the most used strategy subtype for both attention-getting and attention-maintenance, with object manipulation and gaze shifts being the second and third most used. The results of this study will be compared to similar data of interactions of Deaf parents with their autistic children to see what differences in strategies exist. If qualitative differences are found between Deaf and hearing parents, and those differences are linked to greater or lesser success in obtaining and maintaining the visual attention of their autistic children, then the most successful strategies can be identified and used as the basis for novel parent training interventions.

As an audiology student, this research has contributed to my professional development by providing me an understanding of facilitating joint attention, which can be applied to my future clients.

Author(s): Katherine Kingsbury, Speech Pathology & Audiology Major

Grace Koenig, Speech Pathology & Audiology Major

Advisor(s): Aaron Shield, Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology

Kaleigh Hollyday, Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involves both social and cognitive challenges, one being difficulty with visual attention.
