Here, we use behavioral, geospatial, and vocal data of wild lowland woolley monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii) to examine what role vocal communication has in group decision making during travel. Behavioral and geospatial data were collected through day-long follows of a single group of woolly monkeys from the Tiputini Biodiversity Station in Amazonian Ecuador from June to August, 2022. Observers rotated between animals at one hour intervals, recording behavioral states instantaneously every 5 minutes, with all vocalizations being recorded continuously. Spatial data were retrieved from each observer’s personal GPS unit which took coordinates every 20-seconds. These points were then averaged to determine the location of the user, and focal animal, every 15-minutes each day. Change point tests on daily travel paths were conducted in R to determine when the group made significant changes in direction. We used a Wilcoxon Rank Sum test with continuity correction and Permutation test with 10,000 runs to determine if there was a significant increase in the frequency of vocalizations during change points. When mapping vocalization frequency on to change points, significantly more vocalizations occurred 15 minutes before and after change points than during non-change point periods (2.2 vocalizations every 15 minutes versus 1.4 vocalizations every 15 minutes, respectively; W = 50545, p-value = 0.02136; permutation test, p-value = 0.0012). With these results, we demonstrated that during instances of travel decisions, as represented by change-points, there was a higher rate of vocal communication between individual woolly monkeys, potentially highlighting the role of vocal communication to coordinate group movements and maintain cohesion among group members.

Author(s): Nico Jaworski, Anthropology Major
Advisor(s): Kelsey Ellis, Department of Anthropology

In group living species, animals must form a consensus about when and where to perform daily activities (e.g., traveling, foraging, resting) in order to maintain cohesion, otherwise the benefits of group living will be lost.
