Establishing the main factors that deter parents from vaccinating their children is one of the most important steps to be made that can educate those about the importance of vaccination and how it can save lives. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper insight into the factors that affect whether or not a parent chooses to vaccinate their children at birth. This study uses a mixed-methods approach to determine parents’ perceptions of vaccinations. A survey was created with questions collecting basic, non-identifying demographic information as well as specific vaccine-related questions. Overall, the Rotavirus vaccine had the lowest vaccination rate (79.4%) compared to the Chickenpox vaccine with the highest (95.9%). Some of the most common themes that supported vaccination included early prevention, medical recommendation, immunity enhancement, health and safety considerations, and support for the effectiveness of the vaccine. However, those who chose not to vaccinate cited their reasoning as unnecessary, unsafe, and not being educated or recommended for the vaccine by a medical professional. The most common reason for vaccination against a virus was prevention/protection with an average response rate of 36.7% of all responses given. The most common reason for not vaccinating was that it was unnecessary to be given (3.6%). Responses were collected from all 50 states with an average age of 36.1 (SD 11.54). The average number of children per household was 1.39 (SD 0.62). In the future, analyzing the vaccination rate of vaccines given to adolescents beyond the age of 18 months may produce additional findings that further determine the reasons parents choose to or choose not to vaccinate their children.

Author(s): Skyler Montaine-O’Brien, Public Health Major

Advisor(s): Karly Geller, Department of Kinesiology, Nutrition and Health

Vaccination continues to be one of the most effective measures available to prevent the spread of infectious diseases (Hussain et al., 2018).
