The purpose of this study is to design and investigate the effectiveness of curriculum on health disparities by (dis)ability and age in an undergraduate medical sociology course. Student learning outcomes for the unit were developed, and resources were reviewed and selected based on their relevance and ability to enhance student learning in accordance with the selected learning outcomes. I hypothesized that students\u2019 perceptions of their own knowledge of health disparities by age and (dis)ability would increase after completing the curriculum, and that they would be able to show evidence of meeting the student learning outcomes. Students completed a pre- and post-assessment in which they reported their perceived knowledge about various health disparities. Students\u2019 understanding of course content was also assessed through an end-of-unit multiple choice quiz and response to essay questions on a discussion forum. 21 undergraduate students enrolled in the class agreed to participate in the study by allowing their assessment data to be analyzed. Of those 21, 19 participants completed both the pre- and post- self-assessments. Preliminary results show that on a scale of 1 (no knowledge) to 4 (high), on average students rated their knowledge of age-related health disparities as 2.32\u00b10.89 prior to completion of the module and 3.42\u00b10.51 after completion. As for disability-related self-assessment, students rated their knowledge as 2.37\u00b11.12 prior to completion and 3.42\u00b10.51. With this preliminary data, students perceived that they know more about the health disparities of interest after engaging with the designed curriculum. If the data not yet analyzed also shows achievement of student learning outcomes, this curriculum could be utilized for educating future students of SOC\/GTY 357. To expand this study, the work of future students could be analyzed to increase the sample size. Additionally, future research could include the development of objective pretests such that an analysis of student learning could be done to include improved performance in addition to perception of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
