The research conducted in this study focuses on the concepts of body shame and body image within the Miami University student population (specifically first-year students), exemplifying how students have experienced body shame, demonstrating their knowledge of body shame, and questioning if they believe that the culture at Miami University promotes or condemns body shaming. Body shame causes many issues, especially in universities, leading to multiple harmful and often fatal eating disorders caused by self-esteem problems. Preventing this should be a priority within universities. Body image is a self-conscious representation of how somebody feels about themselves, and how they relate to their surroundings. Body shaming is experienced when an individual feels poorly about themselves in comparison to others, and it can be caused by actions and words from others or a lack of pride and respect for oneself. The work we conducted took the form of three different approaches: a literature review, data collection via a survey, and participant interviews. Our findings show that a majority of students at Miami University believe that there is a specific \u201cMiami Image\u201d that attending undergraduates are expected to conform to in order to be successful. However, while students believe that this standard is an existing presence on campus, few respondents expressed that they have directly experienced an instance of body shaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
