Low birth weight is defined as a weight of below 2500 grams and occurs as a result of fetal growth restriction and preterm birth. Some risk factors for low birth weight can include the health of the mother, access to prenatal care, and race. Low birth weight can also lead to future health issues, and remains a significant public health issue as a result. Past research has indicated a link between low birth weight and poverty level, and the objective of this study is to investigate these results in order to potentially decrease the prevalence of low-weight births. This study uses data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) of 2017-2018, which consists of in-person interviews and physical examinations. The interviews consisted of demographic, socioeconomic, and health related questions. The examinations consisted of medical, and physiological measurements conducted by health professionals. A sample size of 3007 survey responses and 2986 responses for the mothers in the data set were used. This data was analyzed using a chi-squared significance test via the SAS coding program to determine whether there is a relationship between poverty level and low birth weight. In our sample 10.4% of the participants had low birth weight. Of those participants that had a low birth weight about 52% were at or below the poverty level. There was no statistical significance between low birth weight and socioeconomic status in our sample. While it was concluded that there was no significant relationship between poverty level and birth weight, this result is inconsistent with the literature and further research must be conducted in order to verify the findings of this study. Future research based on the results of this study could be conducted focusing on race and smoking status and its effect on low birthweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
