Our general research area is media bias. This project questions how influential the media\u2019s bias is on its viewers when portraying racial minorities, women, and protesters. This study is relevant for all fields because everyone is a media consumer. We surveyed the current first-year class at Miami University to understand how influential the bias is on them. Before we surveyed the students, we researched peer-reviewed articles to get a foundational knowledge of examples of bias and their influences. There are six major findings from our preliminary research: three examples of bias and three outcomes of the examples. First, the media portrays racial minorities, especially African-Americans, stereotypically, resulting in viewers accepting them as true. Second, when it comes to women in politics, the media fails to give women the same leadership traits as men, potentially affecting the number of votes women get at the polls. Lastly, coverage of protests typically focuses on the conflict between protesters and the police, preventing viewers from receiving the message of the protests. Using our foundational knowledge, we crafted three survey questions with a qualitative and quantitative approach to determine if the students believe that the media is biased, how influential the bias is on their thinking, and ways to prevent the bias. Many respondents for each question had similar answers. According to them, the media is biased in ways such as stereotypical portrayals of minorities. The respondents consume media daily, and the media influences their understanding of groups such as racial minorities; however, they try to be careful in what they consume. The respondents suggested that people can prevent the influence of media bias through personal experiences, their own research, and by listening to people that identify with a group that the media is biased against. Our next step is to teach our peers the necessary media consumption strategies to avoid bias. This research will be relevant for our intended careers because most of us are media-related majors, so the findings give us a good understanding of how the media works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
