Commonly seen today in most handheld devices, which vibrate as users type on their screens, the area of haptic technology provides a way to deliver sensory information to individuals beyond the senses of hearing and sight. Today, existing haptic technology cannot produce haptic feedback for the largest touch screens as they continue to increase in size. This research plans to address this problem using Electro-Rheological (ER) fluids, a smart material whose behavior is adjusted by sending different electrical signals through the liquid. The main objective is to use ER fluids to control the vibration that a person feels when pressing down on a surface by sending an input vibration through an ER module that can control the output vibration felt by the user. To approach this study, an experimental setup consisting of vibrational measuring equipment such as an accelerometer and oscilloscope was designed to measure the vibration felt at a point on a surface. These devices respectively measure and then display the vibration that a person feels on the surface. At the conclusion of this study it was found that ER fluids can effectively control vibrations at an individual point. Moving forwards, an experiment will be designed that uses ER fluid to control the vibration felt on an entire computer screen-type surface instead of an individual point. This area of study encompasses a major aspect of the field of mechanical engineering, mechanical vibrations, and is built on understanding the mechanical behavior of structures as they experience vibrations. This study has been a great experience in understanding the research necessary in designing different devices, and as somebody interested in a career in product design and development, this research
