An Analysis on Drinking Trends

Alcohol abuse is a continuous problem in the US, and those effects are amplified by the global pandemic in COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic affected drinking culture in limiting social interactions between others. Before continuing, social isolation needs to be defined and is defined as complete (or near complete) lack of contact between an individual and the broad culture. The heart of the pandemic was a time of no social interaction, we stayed in our homes locked away from others and society at large. Work, family and friends all moved online, and for most, this meant all social interactions were held over screens. Humans are extremely social creatures, this adjustment came with many unintended changes to everyday habits and lifestyle choices. Specifically, the fallout of social interaction actually caused a drop in drinking among college aged students. The purpose of this study is to examine the connection between social interaction (or lack thereof) and excessive drinking habits among college aged students. Data will be collected from online surveys housed in Qualtrics via email invitations at a mid-sized midwestern university; the data collection is ongoing with college students as subjects. The expected outcome is finding a direct link between social interaction and drinking habits of college aged students. This study is important as it can help further understandings on the dangerous drinking habits of young adults and potentially help change the culture surrounding alcohol.

Author: Miles Lynn, Psychology

Advisor: Rose Marie Ward, Kinesiology, Nutrition and Health

Alcohol abuse is a continuous problem in the US, and those effects are amplified by the global pandemic in COVID-19.
