Woolly monkeys (genus Lagothrix) are large, frugivorous primates from South America that live in large, mixed-sex groups. Populations range from being critically endangered (yellow-tailed woolly monkey) to vulnerable (brown woolly monkey). Not counting rehabilitation centers in South America, the number of woolly monkeys living in captivity has dwindled from tens of thousands to ~85 in the last 60 years. Woolly monkeys that live in captivity have much lower life expectancies than their wild counterparts, often suffering from diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and reproductive failure. The aim of this study was to identify ways in which we might improve the living conditions of captive woolly monkeys based on behavioral and ecological data gathered from wild populations. I searched peer-reviewed journal articles, edited volumes, book chapters, and webpages, for information on demography, diet, activity budget, ranging patterns, and locomotion, among others. I then compared these data between wild woolly monkeys and captive woolly monkeys. I found that woolly monkeys in captivity rarely had access to conditions that mimicked those of their wild counterparts, nor did they have access to the same food types. To improve captive conditions, I recommend that woolly monkeys are provisioned with a variety of foods including fruits with more fiber, leafy materials, and insects. Enclosures should include substrates of varying thickness (mimicking branches and lianas) and placed at different heights to encourage climbing and more natural feeding and resting postures. Finally, when possible, social groupings should include multiple individuals, preferably of mixed-sex combinations. Such improvements may not only help increase the well-being of captive woolly monkeys in non-habitat countries, but may also improve the skill-set of those at rehabilitation centers marked for release. Given that I intend to move into conservation work within zoos, this research has prepared me to better identify and create captive management solutions for an intended species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
