The experience of war is transformative. It upheaves, changes, then dispenses with the lives of those who experience it, leaving them to rebuild from the ruins and establish new normality. This understanding of war is strongly echoed in the German cinematic canon of the 1920s through the 1960s. This project views these films as primary historical sources, documenting the authentic perspectives and reactions of the filmmakers in films to be shown to and understood by audiences who share a common war experience. Through this method, it is evident that the soldiers’ war story can be generalized into four distinct phases: illusions, shock, transformation, and rebuilding. Each film examined herein illustrates one or more of these, offering its unique perspective to the common thread. Significantly, this methodology distinguishes historical films from contrary ones, as the separation of both time and place from the wars has changed the questions the films attempt to answer. Instead of reacting to war as those who experienced it, the contemporary canon – made by the grandchildren generation – seeks to understand what their grandparents did in the war, validating themselves and their families in the modern socio-political climate. Therefore, this study focuses only on those films made close to the world wars in both time and place. Finally, this study is not exhaustive. It only focuses on the experience of the soldiers in WW1 and WW2, ignoring the stories of the homefront, other wars, and the reactions of the grandchildren generation; each of these questions is valid in their regard and would be a valuable continuation of this study and methodology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
