This area of physics education specifically focuses on students in introductory physics courses and how their self-efficacy and problem-solving methods change over the course of a semester. By tracking the improvement or deterioration of a student’s abilities, the Miami University physics department can improve upon working with groups of students. My research involved asking students to complete two surveys that would measure their self-efficacy in physics and their attitudes and approaches to problem-solving at the beginning of the course and again at the end. This data was then analyzed using statistical analysis and determining significant differences in scores between groups of students and as a whole. The most interesting findings came from comparing male and female student scores in each of the surveys. Males and females tended to fluctuate opposite of one another in terms of scoring, but I found this division of students most interesting as there is a stereotype of physics being a male-dominated field. This data can help show if this stereotype is one based on scientific evidence, or whether it is as a result of historical trends that are changing in the present day. Moving forward, this data can be used in later years to compare how the physics department is developing if this research continues.

Author: Anne Hubbard

Faculty Advisor: Jennifer Blue, Ph.D., Physics Department

Physics education research focuses on how to improve the effectiveness of student learning and curriculum development.
