The development of diabetes mellitus during pregnancy, referred to as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), is a growing concern among public health practitioners and health care providers regarding maternal care. One disconcerting area of interest in particular regarding gestational diabetes is the heightened levels of morbidity of gestational diabetes among minority populations. With this issue in mind, this research project focuses on determining the relationship between race and gestational diabetes in pregnant women in the United States. For the purposes of this study, the NHANES 2017-2018 survey data was used, intentionally excluding variables not relevant to the study. A series of Chi-square analyses and t-tests were run to determine the relationship between GDM and race\/ethnicity as well as other potential confounding variables. The comparison of GDM diagnosis and race\/ethnicity did not produce statistically significant results from a Chi-square test using a p-value of 0.05. In future studies, it may be beneficial to reexamine the association between these two variables with a larger sample size of one minority to the reference population. Additionally, the results found a statistically significant relationship between GDM and other variables: family history of diabetes and participant BMI (kg). Investigating these additional risk factors may aid in a better understanding of GDM prognosis, and primary and secondary prevention. In the long-term, the practice of epidemiological and statistical analyses is a foundational element to a public health career; with the perspective of the disparate impact of disease, this project provided a introductory path to public health methods that relate to community health and the consideration of social determinants of health.
