Risk factors (CRFs) include but are not limited to hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, inflammatory profile, and ethnicity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of diet and/or exercise intervention on cardiometabolic risk factors in sedentary, older adults (≥ 58 yo.) who are classified as obese (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m2). Subjects (n=35) were randomized into one of four experimental groups: control (maintained lifestyle), diet (6 months registered dietitian-guided counseling), exercise (6 months, 3 days/week at moderate intensity), and diet and exercise (6 months combination of diet and exercise intervention) Risk factors examined include body mass index (BMI), percent body fat (PBF), total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glucose tolerance (OGTT), and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c). Body mass index and percent body fat were determined using bioelectrical impedance (InBody 720, Cerritos,CA). Blood lipids and blood glucose were measured using Abbott Cholestech® (San Diego, CA 92121 U.S.A.). Blood pressure was measured using an Omron digital BP monitor (HEM-907XL). Results of this studied demonstrated that the control group showed no significant difference between any of the factors from baseline to endpoint. The diet group demonstrated significant difference from pre to post testing in BMI, PBF, and SBP, meaning diet intervention decreased BMI and PBF (weight loss) and lead to decreased measured SBP values. The exercise group showed no significant differences. The diet and exercise group had significant difference from pre to post testing in BMI, PBF, and DBP, meaning diet and exercise intervention together led to weight loss, which is demonstrated by decreased measurements for BMI, PBF, and DBP. It can be concluded that diet intervention has strong effects on reducing body fat, overall BMI and BP. This research allowed me to further explore my interest in preventative medicine.

Author: Madison M.
