Binge drinking is linked to higher levels of injuries, sexual and physical assaults, higher criminal activity, unprotected sex, missing class, physical and cognitive impairment, etc. There are common alcohol-related negative consequences (such as underage drinking, blacking out, public intoxication, unprotected sex, drugs, passing out in public, puking in public, etc.). Some students (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) students, student athletes, and students with scholarships) have more negative consequences when it comes to risky behaviors and drinking. For example, the ROTC students can be kicked out of the military and have to pay back their scholarship if they get in trouble involving alcohol. The ROTC conducts random drug tests every week that the students are required to participate in. Student-athletes could be kicked off the team and lose their scholarship if they get in trouble. There is a relative paucity of literature examining alcohol consumption among these groups. The purpose of this study is to examine risk-taking behaviors and binge drinking in student athletes, ROTC students, and students with merit scholarships as compared to the average college student. Data is in the process of being collected through an online survey at a midsized midwestern university. The ROTC students, student athletes, and students with a merit scholarship are expected to have lower rates of binge drinking and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. This research provides insight into additional factors which may contribute to risky alcohol consumption. Implications will be discussed.

Author: Jordin Nowak

Faculty Advisor: Rose Marie Ward, Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Health

Binge drinking (a male drinking 5 or more drinks in one setting and a female drinking 4 or more drinks in one setting) has become very common in young adults that go to a 4-year college.
