This research question was raised through an immersion experience in Luxembourg as part of the Global Health minor. I aim to challenge the anecdotal statements that Europe has less environmentally harmful agricultural practices compared to the United States by reviewing their regulatory policies. I have also had the opportunity to understand sustainable agriculture directly by working on farms in the Eastern United States after a semester spent in Luxembourg. This experience showed the interconnectivity of agriculture with other industries and its importance to human health. To bolster these two experiences, a thorough literature review highlighted the effects of agriculture on the environment and how the US and EU systems differ. Conventional agricultural practices have resulted in serious environmental harm that contributes to pollution, reduced soil fertility, and climate shifts. These changes to the ecology are important to mitigate not only for wild species, but for human health. Human’s livelihood depends on the ecological services that a healthy ecosystem provides, and these services must be preserved. This poster reviews the ecological impact of agriculture, how an unhealthy ecosystem affects human health, the environmental policies within the respective institution’s regulations, and suggestions for how to improve the sustainability of agriculture while still maintaining food security.

Author: Grace Sonderman

Faculty Advisors: Dr. Beth Miller, Kinesiology and Health, and Dr. Paul Flaspohler, Psychology

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This poster compares the environmental impacts of the agricultural system of the United States and European Union (E.U) member states.
