Anxiety sensitivity is defined as fear related to the belief that the symptoms of anxiety that a person experiences are indicative of greater harm (Taylor et al., 2007). Anxiety sensitivity is a risk factor for heavy alcohol use (Paulus & Zvolensky, 2020; Stewart et al., 1999). Of note, in existing research, there are gaps on 1) the specific consequences of hazardous drinking and 2) how anxiety sensitivity may relate to those consequences. One of the consequences of heavy alcohol use includes alcohol-induced blackouts (i.e., alcohol-induced amnesia; White et al., 2002). Alcohol-induced blackouts are important to assess, as they are related to negative emotional and social consequences for college-aged students (Wilhite & Fromme, 2015). Furthermore, it is possible that other factors may drive the potential relation between anxiety sensitivity and blackouts. Specifically, drinking motives may be a pathway through which anxiety sensitivity could be related to blackouts. Drinking motives regulate the final decision to drink, meaning that they are the most proximal factor for engaging in drinking (Kuntsche, 2006). Drinking motives that have been linked to alcohol use include coping, conformity, social, and enhancement motives (Cooper, 1994). Data on anxiety sensitivity, blackouts, and drinking motives were collected in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 from a campus-wide survey on undergraduate mental health and campus climate. The current study tested whether relations between anxiety sensitivity and blackouts flow through these four drinking motives. The model fit the data well (CFI=.95, TLI = .91) and indicated that there was a significant indirect path from anxiety sensitivity to blackouts via drinking motives (-.08, p<.001). Approximately, 7% of variance of blacking out was accounted for in this relationship. The social and cognitive aspects of anxiety sensitivity had significant direct and indirect effects on alcohol-induced blackouts while the physical did not. Gender differences were found, with the model most accurately fitting women as opposed to men and nonbinary individuals.
