Voldemar Medn\u00eds presents a glimpse of the beautiful Baltic countryside of Latvia through the eyes of a railway passenger. The perspective provides a sense of being present, as if seated next to the Latvian woman seeing the waving man and woman beckoning you and the other rider to Besuchen Sie Lettland, or \u201cVisit Latvia.\u201d Latvia announced neutrality at the outbreak of the war, but was forced into a pact with the Soviet Union in October 1939. German forces occupied Latvia from July 1941 until 1944 when Soviet forces returned. Independence came to Latvia after the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
