Hundreds of published books present the lives and\u00a0accomplishments of historical African Americans. Many of\u00a0the figures undertook great efforts for the betterment of the\u00a0people, themselves being immortalized for making positive\u00a0change and for being the first, or simply the best, in their\u00a0field. They were activists, politicians, athletes, musicians,\u00a0artists, actors and innovators, whose historical narratives\u00a0range from times of slavery up through modern day. Books\u00a0feature women, men, children, young and old, from many\u00a0walks of life. Individually and collectively, their stories\u00a0illustrate the depth of character and determination to follow\u00a0dreams and overcome prejudices.<\/p>\n

Those whose stories are recounted today are the subjects\u00a0of numerous books. For example, Frederick Douglas,\u00a0Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Dr.\u00a0Martin Luther King, Jr. are portrayed in dozens of books\u00a0with illustrations that bring their stories to life in vivid,\u00a0visual form. These stories are told so that these individuals\u2019\u00a0efforts will not be forgotten, and so that they will continue\u00a0to serve as inspiration for positive self-image. The lives\u00a0represented in children\u2019s picture books often show the\u00a0realities of the hardships experienced over the centuries.\u00a0Others show the triumph of the human spirit and portray\u00a0the accomplishments of people who come together in an\u00a0effort to make this world a better place for all. Many more biographical sketches are waiting to be written.<\/p>\n
