The Civil Rights Movement began in 1954 following\u00a0Thurgood Marshall\u2019s successful defense of Brown v. Board\u00a00f Education<\/em>. One of the pivotal moments of the Civil\u00a0Rights Era came in 1963, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u00a0gave his eloquent I Have A Dream<\/em> speech in the nation\u2019s\u00a0capital. The next year, approximately 800 volunteers from\u00a0across America descended on Oxford, OH, for the historic\u00a0Freedom Summer Project. Freedom Summer helped\u00a0disenfranchised African Americans in Mississippi register\u00a0to vote, and to set up Freedom Schools and Community\u00a0Centers. Eleven days after the Ku Klux Klan murdered three\u00a0Freedom Summer volunteers in Mississippi, President\u00a0Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, ending legal\u00a0segregation.<\/p>\n

As the movement of liberation proceeded, many African-\u00a0American children\u2019s books were published by White\u00a0companies. This increased the exposure of multicultural\u00a0books to schools and libraries, leading to the initial\u00a0integration of African-American children\u2019s illustrated books\u00a0into mainstream publishing. However, African-American\u00a0children\u2019s books were still largely neglected by mainstream\u00a0publishers. Instead of highlighting the uniqueness of their\u00a0cultural heritages, authors emphasized the homogeneity\u00a0among different ethnicities in order to encourage other\u00a0races to develop empathy for African-American children.\u00a0Many illustrated books serve as an educational tools for\u00a0depicting the long and arduous journey throughout the\u00a0Civil Rights Era, and the many people who collectively\u00a0brought about change.<\/p>\n
