The Civil War divided the U.S. over the highly debated issue\u00a0of slavery. Most Northerners supported abolition, while\u00a0the majority of Southerners pushed for the continuation\u00a0of slavery. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln\u00a0issued the Emancipation Proclamation, stating that all\u00a0African Americans \u201cshall be then, thenceforward, and\u00a0forever free.\u201d Many freed and escaped slaves fought for the\u00a0North. In 1865, Congress passed the 13th Amendment in\u00a01865, officially disbanding the institution of slavery.<\/p>\n

Following the Civil War, Congress tried to diversify\u00a0as a representative body for all people. The era of\u00a0Reconstruction gave free African-American men equality\u00a0in political offices and ushered in the 14th Amendment,\u00a0thereby granting citizenship to former slaves and \u201call\u00a0persons born or naturalized in the United States.\u201d In 1870,\u00a0Congress ratified the 15th Amendment declaring that\u00a0the right to vote cannot be denied on the basis of a male\u00a0citizen\u2019s \u201crace, color, or previous condition of servitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two years before war broke out, a former slave from North\u00a0Carolina named Harriet Jacobs wrote a slave narrative, titled\u00a0Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl<\/em>. Jacobs wrote about her\u00a0horrific experiences in slavery and personal abuses prior\u00a0to her escape in 1842. This was one of the earliest books\u00a0describing the lives of children under rule of slavery.<\/p>\n
