In Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Telling A People\u2019s Story<\/em> is the first major museum\u00a0exhibition devoted to the art found within the pages of\u00a0African-American children\u2019s picture books. The exhibition\u00a0emphasizes the strength of the illustrations as visual\u00a0interpreters of narrative representations of the African-\u00a0American experience. While aspects of social justice are\u00a0found throughout, the exhibition goes beyond providing\u00a0a look into the struggles of African Americans. This\u00a0exhibition celebrates the complex and diverse African-American experience through a lens intended for children\u00a0and young readers.<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, the many books created by authors and\u00a0illustrators since the late 19th century contribute to an\u00a0understanding of the African-American experience through\u00a0two perspectives. First is an introspective need for self validation\u00a0and the creation of positive role models for\u00a0young African Americans. Second is to introduce the\u00a0African-American experience to those who are unfamiliar\u00a0with it in order to better understand the cultural, historical\u00a0and social constructs of African-American identity.<\/p>\n<p>African-American children\u2019s picture books are a relatively\u00a0recent literary genre, yet one that consists of an incredibly\u00a0rich tapestry of people and narratives that covers many\u00a0generations and historical epochs. Not every historical\u00a0figure or landmark event could be represented in this\u00a0exhibition. In developing this exhibition, more than 600\u00a0books were reviewed.
