Some people seem to know exactly what they want to study before taking their first class at Miami, while others are still trying to figure it out well into their second year. Both are pretty normal. And if you’re still feeling unsure, it can help to slow down and think through a few things.

First: take some of the pressure off

Many students change their major at least once. Some change it multiple times. And plenty of people end up in careers that don’t perfectly match their major anyway. Yes, your major matters (and in some fields more than others), but it’s often just one part of your story, not the whole thing.

Next: Look at the majors Miami has to offer

Miami offers a lot of interesting majors, so looking through the list is always a great way to start! Check out the program finder to learn more.

What actually interests you?

Start with the obvious question. What do you actually like learning about? Sometimes the best clue is simply noticing which classes keep your attention a little easier than the others.

Think about things like:

What classes have I genuinely enjoyed so far?

What topics do I like learning about outside of class?

What class discussions made me want to keep thinking about the topic after class ended?

What feels natural to you?

Everyone has certain things that click a little more easily. Maybe writing papers feels manageable. Maybe you enjoy explaining ideas to people or organizing projects.

You might think about questions like:

What assignments usually go better than I expect?

What subjects feel the most manageable?

What do people tend to ask me for help with?

Sometimes your strengths can help point you in a direction.

What kind of work sounds enjoyable?

You don’t have to know your exact future job. It can still help to picture the type of work you might enjoy doing.

Ask yourself:

Do I like working with people most of the day or focusing on my own work?

Do I enjoy creative projects or solving problems and analyzing things?

Do I like variety or something more structured?

Thinking about these questions can help certain majors stand out more than others.

What are you curious enough to try?

College is one of the few times you get to explore different interests. Taking a class you are curious about, joining a club, or talking to someone in a major you are considering can give you a better idea of what it’s really like.

You might ask yourself:

Is there a class I have been curious about taking?

Is there a club or organization related to something I want to explore?

Is there someone I could talk to about their experience in that major?

Trying something new can sometimes tell you more than reading about it.

And if you still don’t know yet

Miami offers The Exploratory Studies program, which helps guide students through a structured academic discovery process. And the Center for Career Exploration and Success has a whole page with lots of resources to help you dig in and identify careers and fields that might be a good fit for you.

Final Thoughts

Ask yourself these questions.

What am I curious enough to explore?

What classes would I be excited to take next semester?

What experiences might help me learn more about what I enjoy?

Choosing a major doesn’t have to happen all at once. Choosing a major is less about finding the “perfect” answer and more about learning what fits you over time. Good luck exploring!

Morgan Krugh | Class of 2027

Picking a major is a big decision.
