The Social Justice Teaching Collaborative (SJTC) began in fall 2017, funded initially through an EHS Interdisciplinary Teaching and Curriculum Grant. Expanding from this beginning, the name and faculty membership has evolved since then. This collaborative involves faculty across the division who teach courses that the majority of EHS majors take in their teacher preparation, health and wellness, and family science and social work programs at Miami University.
Current Work
Currently, we are continuing our mixed-methods research study that considers how our curricular and teaching collaborations impact students’ understanding of social justice issues in education. Our research question is: “How does an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on social justice in pre-service teacher education impact students’ understanding about issues of diversity and social justice?”
Looking forward we hope to begin a center or lab to support new, exciting work in three areas: 1) Teaching, 2) Research & Scholarship, and 3) Support and Mentorship.
Miami University carries the name of the Myaamia people who, along with the Shawnee, were forcibly removed from these homelands. Despite centuries of colonization, the Myaamia people preserve a deep connection to this land and are engaged in a vibrant resurgence of their heritage language and culture.
The university maintains a strong reciprocal relationship with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma grounded in our shared commitment to learning and each other.
