Clifton Young Adult/Teen Library by Junnan Li

Concept

Exploration. As time goes by, people become stronger. The library is the same place where people can grow. Because it is going to be bigger, my library is shaped like a greater than sign. At the same time, the design of my plaza is a similar shape. This library is not only a place to read books but also a social place. At the same time, the functionality is also very comprehensive. Singing, dancing, and leisure can all be satisfied here. Solar glass and Fabraic’s shading system help reduce energy consumption.

My concept is connection. There is a need for community and the need for interconnectedness with the natural and built environment. Architecture should create a link between people and the natural environment, an innate connection that has lost its potency in society. This library and any new constructions should minimize their impact on the ecosystem, for example by displacing rather than destroying nature through the use of green roofs and living walls, thus contributing to the environment rather than draining and dominating the environment. This is achieved through meeting the needs of people, among which is social interaction.  These goals must be achieved through consideration of design at all scales, from a single detail to a city, for example the design should provide social opportunities through the integration of program, circulation space, and interior and exterior common areas. Interconnections between the community created by the building and landscape are of vital importance; however, connections to the community beyond the building are also important.

CLIFTON LIBRARY – Olivia Vozzo

Concept: I wanted to create a sense of a smaller community within the larger community, which is Clifton. To create this community, I want to draw people into the pocket plaza from off the side walks and streets but utilizing the views filtered but the trees to spike interesting in the passing audience. Along with bringing people in and forming a smaller senes of community, I want to make the space flexible for those who occupy it, as well as comfortable. I chose moveable and comfortable furniture to make the library an urban living room and reading room atmosphere, while giving the locals the flexibility in how they want to utilize the space.
