The Clifton Library integrates with the Clifton community by using key concept ideas from the Clifton Plaza design. The concept came from the history of Clifton, which was transformed by the modern technologies of the street car. This idea is implemented into the design with the use of an abstracted street car route map on the facades of the library and on the ground plane of the plaza. The Clifton Library introduces a more modern design into the historical Clifton area, while still preserving the history of how the community came to be.

The concept behind my design was revolved around the idea of creating an indoor, outdoor experience. This concept came from the idea that Clifton Plaza which this library is attached to, was an outdoor room, with no walls or roofs. With this design it then creates an interesting experience as one travels from one end of the building to the other.

Concept: Void and Fill

There is an interesting relationship between solid structures and the voids they create; this particular relationship is what I wanted to explore. In the process of designing, I have created multiple spaces where the three volumes intersect. My design explores space through what is there and what is not.

Concept

For my Library Design, I focused on having the public thoroughfare run directly through the center of the library. The public thoroughfare divides the program into 3 main spaces. The lower most region on Howell avenue level being the library and book stacks. The two floors above the plaza level contain all learning and media areas. The public thoroughfare, which is lined with administration is a direct continuation from the plaza into the library program. This thoroughfare divides these two main sectors and provides access to the whole program when allowed.

Clifton Library : Julia Bohlen

Clifton is a vibrant neighborhood with a strong sense of community which will be enhanced through the addition of the Clifton Young Adult Library. The library is meant to serve as an extension of the Clifton plaza and the library originates from the geometries and experiences created in the design of the Plaza. The library is created through the layering of modules with angles derived from the Plaza. As in my Plaza design, the pentagon geometries transform into squares on the interior where the library contains a central core of program elements that falls where the layers overlap and circulation surrounding this core. As the goal is to create a community space, the routes of circulation force users of the library to travel throughout the building and linger, rather than pass through. Throughout the library there are several levels and many opportunities for spaces and impromptu gathering areas, including outdoor terraces. The thoroughfare from the plaza to Howell mirrors the “zig-zag” circulation found within the plaza.

The design I created for this library started out with me thinking about how to create a space that is comfortable and simple but intriguing. I wanted my building to have a lot of natural light highlighting my elements inside. I also wanted to connect Clifton Plaza with my design creating a space that flows.

Concept:
My approach to this design started with the idea of slope and light. For my precedent library, I studied the Delft University Library of Technology in the Netherlands. A key feature that I wanted to encapture from that library to mine was the slope. Another important factor in my concept is the enhancement of natural light. Since the site is facing South, I wanted to take advantage of the amount of natural sunlight coming in. My library is designed to appear to be opening up to the sun.
