{"id":4126,"date":"2026-08-16T17:11:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T17:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/oxmag\/?page_id=4126"},"modified":"2026-08-16T17:11:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T17:11:05","slug":"along-the-avenue-by-anna-drasko","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/oxmag\/along-the-avenue-by-anna-drasko\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Along the Avenue&#8221; by Anna Drasko"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raspberries and figs and peaches<br>in the summertime, ripe<br>within the lawless<br>lands of torn up glass and half<br>finished projects on the cracked<br>footpaths where<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a man pulled down his pants<br>and lightened his body\u2019s burden<br>right in front of the stray cats<br>who took over the empty houses<br>on the block as day declined<br>into dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one saw the sunrise there.<br>Not in the once vacant lot,<br>littered latex, needles, neglect<br>turned scruffy garden ground<br>for the neighbors, goats, chickens<br>amid the many troubles of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was yelling and yarrow<br>flowering, roaring.<br>Smashed tomato and squash.<br>Slumped, sagging bodies<br>drifting home to tents<br>and frayed tarps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, fireflies visited<br>in June. Monarchs flew<br>over the bottles and debris<br>in September. Pitbull puppies tumbled<br>in December rubble, smiles splayed wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Anna Drasko<\/em><\/strong><em> is a writer living in East Tennessee.
