{"id":2939,"date":"2023-02-11T01:00:44","date_gmt":"2023-02-11T01:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/oxmag\/?page_id=2939"},"modified":"2023-02-11T01:00:44","modified_gmt":"2023-02-11T01:00:44","slug":"the-blizzard-dream-by-william-doreski","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.miamioh.edu\/oxmag\/the-blizzard-dream-by-william-doreski\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Blizzard Dream&#8221; by William Doreski"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Telegraphy of rain on snow.\nThe black and white of the day\nenhanced by shades of gray slush\nsimplify the village, revealing\na grimace of frustrated passion\nalmost every citizen enjoys.\n\nCrouched in the little caf\u00e9,\nI try to avoid drifting\nout the door and into clouds\na mile or two overhead,\nleaving my shadow staring up,\noutraged because abandoned.\n\nRecently I dreamt the blizzard dream,\nknee-deep in dark as tough as dough.\nI dreamed of my family, long gone,\nmy pets buried in lonely places,\nmy diplomas fallen from the walls\nof vacant, burnt-out houses.\n\nThe rooms of those houses filled\nwith snow blown a thousand miles\nfrom the frozen lakes of Winnipeg.\nWhen I woke to the chitter of plows\nI knew I\u2019d sinned more honestly\nthat I had ever sinned before.\n\nThe coffee has cooled in my cup\nso I rise to refresh it. The room\ntilts, but I\u2019ve learned to survive\na certain lack of dimension,\nand make it back to my table\nwithout spilling a single drop.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>William Doreski<\/strong> lives in Peterborough, New Hampshire. He has taught at several colleges and universities. His most recent book of poetry is <em>Dogs Don\u2019t Care<\/em> (2022).
