Art History at a Glance

Text Panel

It would be impossible for any single exhibition to fully represent the scope of artistic development over the past millennia. Art History at a Glance seeks to provide a glimpse into the evolution of Western art dating from the 15th through the 20th centuries. Not limited to the mediums of painting and prints, the integration of photography and sculpture shows the wide-ranging modes of artistic expression. Selected works from the Art Museum’s collection represent prominent art movements with examples of Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, Pop Art, and Contemporary works, among others.

Art movements exist through multiple conversations relevant to their respective cultures and times. Some of the most significant movements were founded through artists’ reacting to societal changes, religion, science and technology, war and politics, their rejection or appropriation of previous art styles, and taste established by patrons or prominent art schools. Ideas and philosophies circulated among artists as makers and teachers, creating the next generation of artists and furthering the progression of distinct styles.

Special thanks to our many donors who have contributed to enhancing the Art Museum’s collections. Many works presented here illustrate their passion for art and diverse collecting activities. Additional works were obtained through Art Museum purchases made possible by funds contributed by many patrons and supporters.
