Celebrating the prosperity of art in the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt van Harmenszoon Rijn remains today one of the most celebrated Baroque artists. Known for his paintings and etchings, his brilliant command of light and shadow create the dramatic style for which he is known. Treating the copper etching plate as a sheet of paper, his etchings bear the delicate quality of a sketch. Managing to capture the same dynamic interaction of light and shadow as in his paintings, Rembrandt creates this candid likeness of his beloved wife Saskia surrounded by renderings of five other models. Rembrandt often drew from direct observation of models, providing an elegant life-like quality to his masterful portraits.
