This French manuscript page, written in Latin, is from an unidentified and dispersed Book of Hours. This type of devotional Christian prayer book first appeared in the 13th century and reached popularity in the succeeding two centuries. Each illuminated manuscript possesses a similar collection of texts, prayers and psalms that are hand-rendered with illustrations specific to the book or its owner. The vibrant colors and floral pattern appearing to the right of the text were most likely inspired by the French miniature painter and manuscript illuminator, Jean Bourdichon. Born in Tours, Bourdichon became a well-known court painter to four successive French kings during the late 15th century.
