About MUSO

General Information

Organization

The Miami University Symphony Orchestra is one of the most traditional musical organizations on campus.  All musicians are selected through audition (click here for audition information).  The repertoire spans over all the eras of symphonic music, from Baroque until today.  Members of the faculty coach the various sections on a regular basis, helping the ensemble achieve an individual sound and homogeneous performance style.

The Orchestra is governed by an elected board of students, who participate in most of the decision making.  They deal with marketing, public relations, personnel issues, organization of events, special concerts and international tours.

General Activities

In addition to symphonic repertoire, the symphony orchestra participates every year in an opera production and cocncerts focused on the choral symphonic repertoire.  Our interest in diversification is also reflected in our combined work with other organizations.  For example, in 2004, a selected instrumental ensemble from the orchestra participated in a rare performance of the fully staged version of Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale. In the fall of the same year, the group performed world music in conjunction with Global Rhythms, another university ensemble, having prestigious professional performers and Grammy award winners as soloists.  In the Spring of 2006, the orchestra performed with Dave Brubeck and his ensemble in a gala concert.

The Miami University Symphony Orchestra is very active off-campus as well, traveling around the United States and sojourning into Europe and Russia (click here for our general history).

The ensemble and Dr. Averbach have also gained national recognition for musical prowess and performance.

Thus, the Miami University Orchestra, with its sister organization, the Oxford Chamber Orchestra, offers instrumentalists, major and non-major alike, a superior experience in orchestral performance.

For further information, please feel free to contact us.  We look forward to hearing from you.
