Dolibois European Center, also known as MUDEC. This is an official Miami University campus located in Differdange, Luxembourg that offers a variety of programs for both the academic year and summer. While Miami has opportunities to study abroad across the world, only in Luxembourg are there courses taught by Miami faculty offering Miami credit directly.

MUDEC’s classes are held in a 16th century castle known as the Château de Differdange. It has seen some changes since its construction, of course. It has been converted into a space where students cannot only attend their classes, but eat, socialize, and attend a variety of events and activities. One of the highlights is a French chef who prepares lunches for the students during school days, often offering multi-course meals. In the basement, the wine cellar has been converted into a social space with couches, TVs, and vending machines (which accept Mulaa), all for students to enjoy at their leisure. There is also a library open to students with even more spaces to socialize or study. “To walk into a castle and to take classes and to have your lunches in it. That in itself is a truly unique experience,” said Kimberly Miller from the global initiatives office in an interview.

Inside the Château de Differdange

There are a variety of options for studying at the Luxembourg campus, ranging from 15-18 credit hour semesters, not unlike a normal course load, and two types of summer programs. The first is called the Summer Base, which has students taking two classes over the course of 6-7 weeks. The summer internships don’t offer any credits but are instead opportunities for students to travel abroad and gain work experience outside of the United States. All of these programs are open to any student who wants to apply, but they are becoming increasingly popular and therefore a more competitive application process exists.

Since these programs are located in the heart of western Europe, students also have direct access to some of the most popular tourist sites on the continent. They are given weekends, and in many cases Fridays as well, to themselves, and many use that time to see what they can experience in neighboring countries. It’s only a three-hour trip to five different surrounding countries, and the extensive train network makes travel to these destinations relatively easy. It’s less than a two-hour ride to Paris, while Frankfurt is four hours away. There are other ways to travel as well; flying can cut the travel time in half or even more, and air travel between European countries is much cheaper than flying in the US.

Having some of the most well-known tourist destinations at their disposal means students often spend quite a bit of their time “in” Luxembourg visiting other countries, but many are unaware of some of the highlights of Luxembourg itself. When asked about opportunities inside the host country Kimberly Miller said, “I would really love to see more students spend more time in Luxembourg. It’s a really beautiful country. It has so much to offer. Luxembourg city itself has a number of really incredible museums. It has the Philharmonique, which is like a symphony. It’s got art exhibits. It’s got the International Court of Justice. So there’s plenty to do in Luxembourg.”

MUDEC also offers both discovery tours and study tours. Discovery tours take place during the semester and range from half a day to two days and are completely free thanks to donations. These are meant to take students to nearby lesser-known locations they may not otherwise find themselves. Study tours are five-day trips that provide a much more in-depth look into a topic. Students choose a class for the semester and their study tour will directly tie into the topic of that course. These have the added bonus of taking students farther away from Luxembourg then they would typically go on their own, letting them use that as a jumping off point to go to other places they may not otherwise be able to.

What may come as a surprise to many is that the cost of attending MUDEC is comparable to Oxford. The only additional costs are a student’s own travel expenses, including the flight to Luxembourg, as well as any traveling they might want to do on their own. A complete breakdown of costs for each program can be found on the MUDEC website, and of course there are scholarships and other support options that students can apply for during the application process.

As previously mentioned, the program is getting more popular and therefore more competitive, but is still open to every student. Applications are open now for the 2024 Fall semester; the deadline is November 1st. Spring applications will open this February with a deadline of April 1st. All decisions are made within a month after applications close. More information on all aspects of the program is on the Global Initiatives website, as well as a calendar with events like information seminars and group advising sessions. Students are also encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to see which program works best for them.

By Joseph Israelson — Miami’s Education Abroad is one of the most popular study abroad programs in the nation, and nowhere is it more evident […]

"_s2mail":"yes

11

post-776","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-around-campus
["GET
