The Miami University Hamilton campus\u2019s Professional Clothing Closet recently opened its doors, a timely two days ahead of the Career & Internship Fair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This resource, although novel on the Hamilton campus, has existed in Middletown for the past five years. According to Assistant Director of Career Development Anna Kreiser, who graciously accepted a brief interview at the event, the decision to relocate this year was an effort on the part of the Career and Professional Development Services to accommodate the rapid influx of students relocating from Middletown to Hamilton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon being asked what the main goal of establishing and maintaining this resource is, Kreiser shared that she and her colleagues are hoping to limit the barriers to professional success for disadvantaged students on the Regional campuses. Several individuals may feel as though establishing a solidcareer might be more difficult due to their having a lack of professional skills or knowledge. So, by establishing supportive career programs and resources like the Professional Clothing Closet, staff are demonstrating to students that they\u2019re entirely capable and deserving of professional success, and aren\u2019t alone in their endeavors to achieve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the event, students were provided open access to a large closet of professional clothing, which they could take and keep at no charge. According to Kreiser, this supply is largely made up of donations from members of the university staff and community. Since the program had been in place for so long in Middletown, there was already an existing stock of clothing there, which was relocated to Hamilton earlier this year. Leading up to the grand opening, though, a drive was held to acquire further donations, which several staff members generously contributed to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When students entered Rentschler Hall, there was no question as to where the event was located; a sign-in table was clearly visible and adorned with Miami\u2019s signature red. There was alsoa buzzing sound of voices radiating into the surrounding hallway from inside the closet space, which was full of staff and students shuffling through the racks of donations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most staff members appeared to be busy attending to students and were observed to be carrying out tasks such as assisting with clothing selections, demonstrating how to tie a tie, or providing general guidance on what constitutes professional attire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside free clothing and staff assistance, students had access to resume drafting and printing resources; career-readiness kits, including items that might be useful for interview preparationsuch as lint rollers or pens; and an open table of free snacks and refreshments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, based on the observed attitudes of staff members, it seemed as though they were incredibly enthusiastic about the opening of this Professional Clothing Closet. Kreiser was clear that this wasn\u2019t a one-off event, either, and that this support will be available to students throughout the semester. For studentsseeking to take advantage of this resource, feel free to visit their drop-in hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 12 PM in Rentschler Hall, Room 103, or schedule an appointment through Handshake. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
