The discussion opened up with various definitions of “entrepreneur.” The collective answer was that such a person generally runs his or her own business, most often selling product to customers.

A hypothetical situation was than put fourth, asking attendees to consider the following: If someone were to give them a hundred dollars and told them to turn that into a thousand dollars in half a year, what would they do? The stock market was quickly identified as risky. Another option was to pay off a debt. Doing this wouldn’t turn the money directly into a thousand dollars, but debt relief would allow the growth of more money in the bank.

The difference between an entrepreneurship and a side-hustle was also brought up. One clue to this difference is in the name “side-hustle.” The word “side” implies a separate, main source of income, so the “hustle” is on the side as something that can bring in a bit of extra money. An entrepreneurship, however, is often one’s main source of income.

Dr. Hamilton spoke of her sister and niece, who make bourbon balls—consisting of butter, sugar, and sometimes nuts, in addition to bourbon—which she praises as delicious. The possibility of selling them in the city for the holidays was discussed. Attendees were asked to think like entrepreneurs and give advice and suggestions for such an endeavor. The results are as follows.

Consider the cost of ingredients and weigh this against the planned price.

Know how to advertise. A location was suggested: a fairgrounds that offer space for venders to sell food, which may or may not require a license.

Consider customer experience. If your product could cause an issue, people are less likely to return in the future. These bourbon balls are chocolate-coated, meaning they will get the attention of children. An alcohol-free option would alleviate the trouble and leave customers feeling better when they don’t have to deal with the kids possibly getting into the chocolates.

Remember customer surveys and take advantage of them.

Important: After a certain threshold of success, the FDA will step in to make sure that everything is up to code in terms of cleanliness, sources, and practices.

After this conversation, it was pointed out that Miami offers free classes on business start-ups which take place on Saturdays. Collaborations such as restaurants and malls were mentioned as a useful social resource as well.

The talk wrapped up with an offer for the attending students to write and present a short proposal on how they will make money with a one-hundred-dollar investment in any area or idea one submits. The reward for a well-written, plausible piece being the hundred dollars, due in two weeks.

By Tricia Cherry — The topic of this past week’s TEE Time was entrepreneurship.
