In the downtown Miami Hamilton location recently, band mates Anne Bangert and Steve Covington of the alternative folk band Steve Covington and the Humble Strays hosted \u201cMusic Collective,\u201d a quarterly event at which musicians play live sets for free to an audience of willing listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bHost Anne Bangert stated in a brief interview that she and Steve started the Music Collective three years ago to replace the \u201cMusic Caf\u00e9,\u201d a similar event, facilitated through the university, that was established in the late 90s by an elderly couple who opted to retire after the pandemic. Anne and Steve\u2019s decision to create their own version of the event was guided by their understanding as musicians that spaces at which aspiring artists can perform for a set of willing and observant listeners are incredibly hard to come by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe Music Collective is an appealing opportunity for all types of musicians. It\u2019s a comfortable space for aspiring artists to get early experience with performing, and it offers established musicians a means of escape from the drab bar scene. It\u2019s also a low-stakes environment to test out new material for a set of attentive listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bApart from Anne and Steve, three of the other attendees were there to perform that evening: Sasi Scott, Luke Wenland, and Caleb Sellman. Others were there for the purpose of observing the live sets. According to Anne, their typical crowd is similarly composed of an equal mix of musicians and listeners. She also noted that a set of regulars from Hamilton often make appearances at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bBefore the start of each performance, Anne introduced the musicians and informed the audience of when and where their next gigs would take place.<\/p>\n\n\n

Performer Sasi Scott<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Sasi Scott, a 17-year-old alternative rock musician, was the night’s first performer. Throughout the entirety of her set, she played her own original music, except for one cover. Alongside her work as a solo artist, she does guitar and vocals for the Green Fuzz Band. Outside of music, she\u2019s currently in her senior year as a student at Butler Tech and has plans to study Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship at Miami University next fall. Her aim in following this course of study is to assist her pursuit of a career as a musician by educating herself on the ins and outs of the music and entertainment industry. The raw and authentic descriptions she gave of the feelings and experiences that inspired the songs she wrote made it evident that music serves as a sort of emotional release for her, and like any true artist, the sharing of her work equates to her sharing a part of her innermost self with her audience.  <\/p>\n\n\n

Performer Luke Wenland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\u200bThe next musician, Luke Wenland, played original songs as well and showcased just as evident a passion for composing and performing music as the artist who preceded him. His music could be characterized as a mix of country and the blues. However, Luke himself was hesitant to attach himself to a specific genre because, as an artist, he values authenticity and wants to avoid limiting his creativity to the confines of a specific category, or losing his individuality as an artist by striving to fit in with predefined standards and sounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explained before starting the first song in his set that he began his journey as a musician ten years ago after purchasing a guitar for himself on his 30th birthday and has since then fallen in love with the act of composing and performing music. He described himself as a very prolific writer and noted that he often has a difficult time deciding which songs to perform in his sets\u2014which, interestingly, he does on the spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Scott, he prefaced each of his songs with brief narratives in which he described the song’s meaning or some other element of his musical journey, which again served to showcase the personal attachment he has to the music he composes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe form to apply to perform at an upcoming Music Collective event is linked on their Instagram and Facebook. Anne also made a point of noting in her brief interview that they don\u2019t turn away applicants, so even artists with limited experience are encouraged to apply.
