This past Wednesday, a group of four gentlemen gathered in downtown Hamilton at 221 High Street for \u201cSong Farmers,\u201d a monthly event advertised to the public as an acoustic jam session. The event is held on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 P.M and is both free and open for anyone to attend, either as participant or observer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Wednesday, the four male attendees\u2014George, Jim, Tom, and another individual who opted to remain anonymous\u2014sauntered in with hefty guitar cases, keyboards, and amps, in preparation for a night of music-making. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group tends to play country, folk, and gospel music. When pressed further for what groups and artists are showcased in their repertoires, they listed several notable names from the 1960s and 70s, such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. Then, after doing so, collectively poked fun at themselves for displaying their ages with such vintage selections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each individual, apart from the keyboardist, took turns leading the performance. The microphone was placed in front of whomever was taking his turn. Then, after adjusting the mic and sharing their song suggestion, they instructed the rest of the group on what notes and chords to play alongside them as they performed. Once the individual started playing, the others joined in, watching intently and pausing to ask for clarification whenever necessary, yet persisting in their performance despite any mistakes or interruptions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each individual was uniquely fascinating to watch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gentleman who opted not to share his identity was undoubtedly immersed in the music for the entirety of the session. He tapped his foot incessantly to keep his rhythm as he played classic songs from memory on an acoustic guitar, while shutting his eyes and bopping his head in pure concentration, as he willed his movements to ebb and flow with the intensity of the music. He carried this passion into observing others’ performances as well. In one instance, he requested that Jim play one of his personal favorite Irish folk songs, and upon hearing the opening chords, rose from his seat to sing alongside him, closing his eyes and swaying as he did so.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another gentleman, George, arrived later than the rest, carrying his guitar case and a tote bag, which held his amp and a liter of RC Cola, that he took swigs from between songs to keep his voice intact. Uniquely, George opted to play original compositions from memory, all of which sounded as though they belonged on a vintage record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The magic of their music was only enhanced by the uniquely intimate setting of Song Farmers; here, music enthusiasts can enjoy the art form while also connecting with others who share their passion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For any old souls or music lovers intrigued by the idea of spending an evening participating in or enjoying the pleasure of hearing live music with an acoustic sound reminiscent of decades long passed, this may be an event worth checking out. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
