Literary journal and student organization Illuminati: A Journal of the Arts<\/em> thrived at the open mic during Oxford\u2019s poetry reading last Friday, April 18th. The event, led by librarian Mark Dahlquist, was part of the \u201cPoetry at Miami\u201d Celebration, which focused on the history of poets at Miami University, in the spirit of National Poetry Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the readings, several other activities were planned. There was a Maker Poetry Workshop that aided participants in creating buttons, zines, and blackout poetry, and afterwards, student curators Nya Hodge and Anastasija Mladenovska presented their talks in tandem with Poetry at Miami\u2019s digital exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the readings began, Nya Hodge served as the afternoon\u2019s MC, introducing The Femellectual<\/em> to the platform with Olive Abram and Emma Elson as first speakers. After them, Happy Captive<\/em>, the newest literary magazine out of the four (founded in 2014), was represented solely by Savannah Slater before transitioning to the Illuminati\u2019s <\/em>cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illuminati<\/em> opened with frequent contributor Tyson Jung, who read his poems from the upcoming spring issue, which includes \u201cAfternoon in the Pool on My Day Off Work,\u201d \u201cMoonlit Drunk,\u201d \u201cWall Math,\u201d \u201dMilk Pt. 1,\u201d and \u201cMilk Pt. 2.\u201d In typical poetry fashion, the room echoed with occasional snaps\u2014music to any poet\u2019s ears. Tyson had previously won the organization\u2019s 2024 Fall Writing & Art Competition in the art category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sean Hopper, president of Illuminati<\/em>, followed with two poems: \u201cBubblegum Juice\u201d and \u201cKerri-Anne\u2019s Mini-Van,\u201d the latter published in the 2024 Spring issue. His refreshingly humorous tone left the audience with all smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Editor Kira Day kept up the lighthearted energy with \u201cAlien Conspiracy Theories,\u201d \u201cNo Better Than a Goose,\u201d and \u201cThe Pitch.\u201d The first of the three will be published in this spring’s issue. As laughter lingered in the room, Illuminati\u2019s<\/em> final speaker was announced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maureen Wilson, another editor of Illuminati<\/em>, read \u201cBlink Twice\u201d and \u201cWhite Lines\u201d to conclude the group\u2019s participation. The mood switched to a more pensive one, which continued into Inkling\u2019s set with Riley Courtney and Nya Hodge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the readings, Vice President and Assistant Editor Lindsey Cooley supported the organization from the sidelines. With Illuminati<\/em> ramping up for their 30th Birthday Bash and Spring Launch<\/a> on May 1st, this event has only boosted everyone\u2019s confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
