Artificial intelligence (AI) can help you brainstorm ideas, explain difficult concepts, create study materials, organize information, and get past a blank page. But just because AI can<\/em> help with a task doesn’t mean you should use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before using AI for an assignment or project, ask yourself these six questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Do I understand the task?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Can you explain what you’re being asked to do? Would you recognize a good final result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No? Stop.<\/strong> Clarify the assignment or ask your instructor before involving AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you feel comfortable knowing the potential harms of AI completing this task?<\/strong> This question doesn\u2019t have a right or wrong answer, but serves as a reminder to use AI thoughtfully and with your own values in mind. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will using AI take away an opportunity for you to grow professionally or academically by learning or practicing this skill? <\/strong>(Hint: A Ph.D. candidate will probably not learn something new writing an APA-style reference page for the 96th time, but a student in freshman English probably needs to practice this skill.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No? Stop.<\/strong> Don’t use AI to produce work you can’t understand or stand behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five yeses?<\/strong> AI may be an appropriate tool for the task. Use it thoughtfully, stay involved in the work, and remember that you’re responsible for the final result. Passing this check doesn’t override your instructor’s requirements or Miami University policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six Ways AI Can Help You Learn<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When your instructor permits AI use, consider these ways to make it part of your learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Brainstorm ideas, but make your own decisions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

AI can help you explore topics and identify angles you may not have considered. Use those suggestions as a starting point, then narrow and refine your ideas yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Get explanations, but don’t replace your course materials.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

AI can explain unfamiliar concepts or summarize information in simpler language. Use it to supplement your textbooks, lectures, and other course materials\u2014not replace them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Practice for exams, but don’t let AI take your quizzes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ask AI to create practice questions that help you identify what you understand and what you still need to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
