In that case, chances are that you work full time, you\u2019re a caregiver, or you may have many other responsibilities competing for your time. Have you considered the flexibility of an online degree that fits your busy schedule? She is a <a href=\"https:\/\/miamioh.edu\/cas\/graduate-studies\/project-dragonfly\/global-field-program\/index.html\">Global Field Program<\/a> student in the Project Dragonfly program and will graduate in the Summer of 2025. She began her journey with Project Dragonfly in 2022. Aurelia is a Teaching Assistant for <em>Biology in the Age of Technology<\/em>, one of several online Project Dragonfly courses. In addition to her graduate studies with Miami University, Aurelia is pursuing a Ph.D., at the University of New Mexico, studying the Ecological and Evolutionary Applications of Modeling Neurodiversity in Social Arthropods.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d39909dd41e1c13b11f82664ce4e9fcf\" style=\"color:#c41230\">Why enroll in an online program such as Project Dragonfly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Aurelia learned about Project Dragonfly from a peer while she was an undergraduate at the University of Colorado, Denver. Her colleague told her about Miami\u2019s online graduate programs and partnership with the Denver Zoo. With the coursework entirely online, Project Dragonfly gave Aurelia the flexibility she needed to earn a master\u2019s degree. She had just accepted a teaching job in New Mexico; moving to Oxford, Ohio, would\u2019ve been impossible. She could take her online courses as her schedule permitted and complete the in-person <a href=\"https:\/\/miamioh.edu\/cas\/graduate-studies\/project-dragonfly\/earth-expeditions\/index.html\">Earth Expedition<\/a> trips during her summers. Aurelia shared, \u201c[Project Dragonfly] has been extremely valuable \u2014 I love the [Global Field] program so much. It&#8217;s been an important source of growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10d64c6144109ec0b9d69a08ed2330a7\" style=\"color:#c41230\">For an adult student, what are some advantages of being in an online program?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:22px\">Aurelia V (AV): \u201cI think [online] makes [getting a graduate degree] easier in a lot of ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2df3612fc25b28e98a905817ec7f85cc\" style=\"color:#ad102a\">Aurelia mentioned the following positive experiences of being an online student:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">You can do the work more within the capacity of your schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">The work is more independent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">You don&#8217;t have to worry about physically getting to class.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">This program is designed for people already in a teaching career, working full-time, and managing busy lives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">[I feel] a sense of great accomplishment when a project is complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-04b011d71e883d7b30a60d93cc043a7b\" style=\"color:#c41230\">What are some of the challenges in an online graduate program?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">AV: \u201cYou have to be self motivated and manage your time well to keep up. And that&#8217;s not always easy.\u201d You have to be adaptable as an online student and when you&#8217;re juggling priorities. Priorities can shift; different projects come up\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0cdbbb8e1eed0f117bfe0fe543d4b7f4\" style=\"color:#ad102a\">Some additional thoughts for consideration:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Even though it\u2019s online, you have to keep up with all the discussion posts, assignments, and occasionally check in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Online interactions may seem less personal.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be aware that you can misread tone and others\u2019 body language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Awareness and excellent communication skills will help overcome frustrations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Like traditional graduate studies, you&#8217;re designing projects and implementing them.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">There are a lot of essays and research that fuel these projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">AV: \u201cThe other factor for me is that I have disabilities; I have physical limitations, and sometimes neuro-behavioral stuff can pose a challenge. Navigating that as a graduate student can be difficult. I require a lot of support from my academic community to be able to accomplish what I want to accomplish. It can be hard for me, so I need people to understand my situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-db0c8ab8ab048f6da31a781f0661ec06\" style=\"color:#c41230\">How has Miami University supported you with accommodations to help you succeed with Project Dragonfly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 27%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">AV: \u201cI&#8217;ve been very supported at Miami. The accommodations program through Miami is great. Most people I&#8217;ve encountered in Project Dragonfly have been super understanding. The Earth Expeditions are big trips, and sometimes there are things I&#8217;m limited by, can&#8217;t quite accomplish, or need to go a little bit slower than everybody else. Usually, people are very understanding. And I think that is a benefit, but I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s necessarily a benefit of all online programs. I think Project Dragonfly is more supportive of that flexibility in many ways. The staff will work with students to tailor accommodations to their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-88924f351c97305c99734e63e562d3c0\" style=\"color:#c41230\">How are you interacting with your peers, professors, and the people you&#8217;re doing research with online?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Online meetings<\/strong> \u2014 There are typically a few Zoom calls throughout the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Attendance isn\u2019t required; meetings are recorded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">You can watch the recordings if you can&#8217;t make it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Discussion posts<\/strong> \u2014 This is the primary way to interact with peers and faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Discussion post interaction is part of the grading structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">You\u2019re required to respond to at least three of your peers and then respond to all of your responses, which encourages dialogue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">You get helpful peer feedback instead of the instructor solely evaluating your work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Faculty office hours<\/strong> \u2014 Utilize this resource! Most are willing to schedule a different meeting time if the posted times don&#8217;t work for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Peer groups<\/strong> \u2014 Some courses assign you to a peer group to help you feel more connected to others in the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-40023b1241061bdb24e8158c5f398e80\" style=\"color:#c41230\">How do you handle distractions while you&#8217;re trying to work or study?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">AV: \u201cI get distracted. I have an easier time writing papers and that kind of course setup where the work is more independent. I get distracted over Zoom calls. It can be really hard for me to sit, pay attention, and focus.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f49fdafa0210fae471cb29b064833f33\" style=\"color:#ad102a\">Tips to help with focus and avoid distractions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">How to best eliminate distractions will vary from individual to individual and may depend on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Set aside study time in a quiet environment.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Avoid being in the same space with people having conversations or doing other tasks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">At home, do your coursework in a dedicated but comfortable space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Keep a detailed Google calendar or another digital calendar.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add all of your meetings \u2014 required virtual, meetings with peers, and time with your instructors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add assignment due dates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Create a separation between your job<\/strong> (if applicable), online coursework, and your life\/family; i.e., leave your computer in that space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Don\u2019t check emails outside designated times<\/strong>; set \u201cactive\u201d and \u201cdo not disturb\u201d focus hours.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/calendar\/answer\/11190973?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop\">Google instructions<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/iphone\/set-up-a-focus-iphd6288a67f\/ios\">Apple instructions<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/manage-your-notifications-in-outlook-mobile-d3b5a22b-919c-4d30-a26f-ae9a0a78ba90#:~:text=In%20your%20Inbox%2C%20tap%20the,that%20work%20best%20for%20you.\">Outlook instructions<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">If at home, block off \u201cfocus time\u201d on your calendar to help your mindset \u2014 this is time to work on your studies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\">Listen to music if it\u2019s helpful to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-36e26354963801ee57f8da8cf8035c12\" style=\"color:#c41230\">Concluding thoughts about online graduate studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-81d94339ecf940892298a17b70576b39\" style=\"color:#ad102a\">Would you like to share anything else about being an online student or your experience with Project Dragonfly?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">AV: \u201cGaining resources and skills from Project Dragonfly graduate classes has been super important. We focus on education, conservation, and connecting with community members. I work in an arthropod research and conservation lab for my Ph.D. Even though my dissertation research differs greatly from what I&#8217;ve done with Project Dragonfly, I still use those skills. I advance outreach in connections with our community \u2014 that&#8217;s been valuable and fulfilling. As a scientist, having academic skills and outreach skills are essential. Miami offers added value because not every graduate program emphasizes community outreach and education skills.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><blockquote><p>Having the [online] option and the opportunity is incredibly important for people, especially at the graduate level, because it&#8217;s the era where you&#8217;re also doing other things \u2014 you are usually employed in some capacity and trying to advance your education so that you can do more.
