If you teach multiple sections of the same course, combining them into one course in Canvas makes a lot of things easier—except scheduling Webex meetings for class sessions. Unfortunately, Webex doesn’t recognize sections within Canvas, so it doesn’t give you the option to create meetings specifically for different ones. However, you have a few options for managing this.
Use your Webex personal meeting room
Webex provides you with a link for your personal meeting room, and it never changes, so you can simply provide it to students and tell them to join your class at their regular meeting time. You’ll find this link when you log in to Miami’s Webex portal.
While this is the simplest solution, it presents a challenge: People can try to enter your personal meeting room anytime from its link. If you’re not in your meeting room, you’ll get a email that someone is waiting for you to join them. If you’re already in a meeting, you’ll be prompted to manually permit new people who arrive to join your Webex meeting. This can make the start of your class session chaotic.
Create recurring meetings in the Webex website
Students can’t see meetings you’ve scheduled in Miami’s Webex portal within Canvas, so you could schedule recurring meetings for class sessions for each section, but then you’ll need to send students links for their meetings. This method will require a lot of messaging, but you can create a meeting template in Webex for your class sessions, which will make creating new meetings easier.
Create all of your class meetings in Webex in Canvas
If you go this route, you’ll need to let students know they should only attend Webex meetings at the day/time their session’s class usually meets. There’s nothing to stop a student from joining the other session’s meeting, but you can pull a meeting roster from Webex to check if this is happening.
